Bathrooms definitely are a unique space. It’s a chance to add a little personality to your decor if you haven’t been brave enough to go all out in the living spaces. Or maybe you dream of a tranquil setting to enjoy calm while you soak in the bath. Either way, here’s a few tips on how to make your bathroom tile selection.
WHERE TO START
Choose your hero piece first. Want a bright pattern on the floor? A subway tile up the wall, a feature shower in penny rounds? Start with the one tile you can’t live without, then match the others from there.
A high gloss tile is absolutely calling your name? Great! Just don’t add it to the floor. Consider textures with water added (the slippery scale). Maybe mix it around and use that gloss tile on the wall to be safe.
RULE OF 3
3 different tile options is a good rule of thumb. Try choosing one for the floor, one for the wall, and a detail piece for the shower or vanity to break things up. This doesn’t have to be different colours, but could be the same tile in a different size cut. More or less, 3 different tile options will work in most sized bathrooms. But again, this is your space so go wild!
Not all tiles are created equal. Bathrooms are wet areas that require a little more thought with tile surfaces unless you absolutely love to clean on a regular. A porcelain or ceramic tile is a great choice as they are virtually maintenance free. A natural stone will soak up those stains and marks and need to be sealed. It’s the same with grout options too.
But if you have your heart said on a natural stone surface then do it! But keep in mind there will be maintenance involved.
