HOW TO: Choose fireplace tiles

A flawless fireplace creates a focal point for your living space, especially in winter when it frames those cosy flames. Think dinner parties in with friends, or nights cuddled up on the couch. This spot really is life giving over those colder months.

But do those high temperatures limit your tile choices in this area? Not at all! The average fireplace can reach a little over 500 degrees celsius, where the tile exceeds 1,300 degrees celsius when fired in a kiln. Your only limitation is making sure you don’t add a wall tile to the hearth to avoid cracks from any accidentally dropped timber (we would never let you add a wall tile to the floor anyway so never fear!).

When it comes to styles, a natural stone tile will create a traditional look. The patterns and mosaics will add a contemporary feel. Wood look tiles add warmth. A marble finish creates a touch of luxury. Metallic and brick look tiles will give an industrial finish. The list goes on! You really have every option to display your personality and style, and being such a small space it’s a chance to add a piece of drama you may not have been brave enough to do in a larger space.
